In Langa township, a shack in an informal settlement is far more than a structure made of wood, zinc, plastic, and salvaged materials. It is a family’s entire world—shelter, kitchen, bedroom, and protection. When fire or flood strikes, it disappears in minutes, taking with it blankets, documents, medication, school uniforms, and every measure of stability. Children lose their beds and study space; the elderly lose the fragile routine that helps them survive daily life.

Neighbours respond first, sharing what little they have, but community solidarity cannot bear the full weight of disasters in deep poverty.
