PROJECT
School
Schools in townships like Langa have a history of segregation and, as a result, face many challenges. Unfortunately, the limited availability of resources and materials is not even the biggest issue these schools face.
Almost all children live in shacks. More than 80% of their parents—if present—are unemployed. Unemployment means no income, and no income very often means going to school with an empty stomach, without proper shoes or a school uniform. This is far from an ideal starting point for both students and teachers.
Because food is the top priority, schools provide at least one meal a day, at the expense of their already limited budgets.
Classes frequently have more than 75 students, which is far from ideal for a productive learning environment.
Schools need funding across a wide range of areas—from food and clothing to computer infrastructure and projectors. With these resources, their highly motivated teachers can significantly improve the effectiveness of learning. Quality education is the catalyst for a better life—something most students are eager to use to uplift their communities.
